Noc-ten storm causes damages worth over 70 million baht to Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI, August 5 (TNA) - Disaster prevention and mitigation authorities in Chiang Mai have initially estimated damage caused by the Noc-ten storm in 21 districts of the northern Thai resort province at over 70 million baht, with San Kam-phaeng being the heaviest hit area.
Komsan Suwanampa, Chiang Mai's disaster prevention and mitigation chief, said on Friday that the Noc-ten storm, from July 30 to August 5, have caused damage to nearly 66,400 households in 808 villages of 21 districts, 40,848 rai of local farmlands, 1,286 farm animals, 124 fish ponds, 1,557 houses, 141 roads, 40 bridges and 122 dams.
Komsan acknowledged that the Noc-ten storm, which has also ravaged some other 16 provinces in the Thai North and Northeast, has killed two flood victims in Chiang Mai alone, and that provincial authorities are dispatching necessities to local flood victims and speeding up drainage.
The provincial disaster prevention and mitigation chief assessed that the flooding situation in Chiang Mai should relieve by today unless there were more heavy downpours.
Meanwhile, Chumphon Intathep, disaster prevention and mitigation chief of nearby Lamphun Province, said that the Noc-Ten storm has caused damage to 14,353 local households in 299 villages of six districts, and that local officials are urgently assisting flood victims and have dispatched food supply and drinking water to them.
The overflowing Kuang River, which passes through the heart of the Lamphun Province, was receding but local people were afraid that flooding could resume if there were more downpours and floodwater flowing from upper provinces. (TNA)
