A letter sent by Bulent Tulun of Galatasaray soccer club to the club's former president Adnan Polat has revived allegations of match-fixing in a match between Fenerbahce and Denizlispor in the 2005-06 season. Upon directives given by the prosecutor carrying out the match-fixing probe, police searched Tulun's house, Galatasaray's facilities in Florya and Polat's office.

IT HAS BEEN A GOOD START
President Abdullah Gul commented on the Supreme Military Council's (YAS) decision to extend the term of office of jailed generals. "If there had not been an extension, the new General Staff Chief would have made a difficult start. Now, it has been a good beginning," Gul said.
Prior to the YAS meeting, it has been known that President Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan supported the retirement of barred generals. As Gul approved the extension of the duty terms of 14 generals "just for once", the tension calmed down.

Premises of the club have been searched and an executive has been asked to give a statement due to the allegation that the club had paid an incentive bonus for a game in 2006. Yesterday, police questioned Galatasaray's Sportive Director Bulent Tulun about club chairman Adnan Polat's earlier remarks saying "Galatasaray would be champions at 8:45 p.m.". Releasing a statement on the issue, Galatasaray said there were no accusations against the club.

Turkish Central Bank, which was concerned that risks in foreign markets might cause a recession in the domestic market, made a surprising move yesterday and revised down its policy rate from 6.25 to 5.75 percent. Upon such move, the U.S. dollar, which earlier traded at around 1.69 TL, climbed to 1.74 TL. Moreover, the decline in the Turkish stock market was above 3 percent.
