Thailand’s flood death toll climbs to nine, six still missing

BANGKOK, August 4 (TNA) - Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health has confirmed at least nine people died and six are still missing in the week-long flooding, which was influenced by the powerful Noc-ten tropical storm, in Thailand’s North and Northeast.

Dr Narong Sahametha, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health, issued the update on Thursday, saying that two deaths were recorded in Chiang Mai province, three in Mae Hong Son province, and one each in Sukhothai, Sakon Nakhon, Phrae and Udon Thani Provinces, with most cases involving drowning, electrocution and landslides.

He said that six individuals were still missing in Phrae, Mae Hong Son and Sakon Nakhon provinces.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health also said the flood crisis had spread to two more northern provinces namely Phayao and Phetchabun, bringing the total number of flood-stricken provinces to 17 including Phrae, Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Nan, Mae Hong Son, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Bung Kan, Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom and Phichit.

Dr Narong noted at least 7,000 people had suffered from water-borne diseases, the most being athlete’s foot, followed by flu, while more than 79,000 sets of medicine had already been distributed to them. (TNA)
