Math education essential for development: Thai PM

BANGKOK, August 4 (TNA) - Caretaker Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva says the government will continue supporting the development of mathematics education, saying it is essential for the development of Thai youths and the country’s workforce.

Speaking at Government House on Thursday morning, Abhisit received a courtesy visit from Phumthep Klang-urai, Secretary-General of the International Mathematics Contest (IMC) Union, along with 17 Thai students who won medals from the 2011 IMC International Mathematics Contest in Singapore.

During the meeting, Abhisit congratulated the students on their success, and for bringing fame to their country.

The Thai premier noted Thailand was often gauged as having substandard science and educational development, particularly in mathematics, which he said was an indispensable instrument for the Thai youth learning process, and national workforce development.

He insisted that until now, the government had undertaken necessary steps to improve mathematics and science education throughout the country, with a vision to create young, capable people to steer the nation forward. (TNA)
