Thailand is not ready for the ASEAN Community: Survey

BANGKOK, August 4 (TNA) - More than half of Thai academics believe Thailand is not ready for the liberalization of the education system in the ASEAN region, according to a recent survey by Suan Dusit Poll.
The opinion survey was conducted by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University from August 1-4, involving 1,218 teachers, students and Education Ministry personnel nationwide.
Of the respondents, 49.25 percent said they were well aware of the liberalization process, 26.79 percent said they were partially aware of it and 14.01 percent said they had no idea.
Regarding Thailand’s readiness for the process by 2015, 51.37 percent of the respondents believed Thailand was not ready and had yet improved many aspects of its educational services; 20.42 percent said the country was not ready because Thai educational services were still substandard; 17.52 percent said Thailand was quite ready because relevant plans had already been put in place; and only 10.69 percent thought the country was totally prepared.
In terms of preparing for education liberalization in ASEAN, most respondents said the government should provide support to schools. The rest said, the government should focus on skills development of educational personnel and students, namely language and communication skills. (TNA)
