Bangkok will unlikely be flooded: Authority

BANGKOK, August 4 (TNA) - Bangkok is unlikely to be flooded in the coming days, as some have feared, thanks to the Royal Irrigation Department's efficient water management measures and high capacity of Thailand's major Chao Phraya Dam in the central Chainat Province.
Thai Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives Chalermporn Pirunsarn assessed the situation on Thursday, saying that the Chao Phraya Dam is now catering some 2,500 cubic metres of water per second from the country's northern flooded parts; while the Thai capital is able to cope with water from the upstream areas up to over 3,000 cubic metres per second without any inundation.
Chalermporn acknowledged although the severe flooding in low-lying areas near the Ping, Wang and Nan Rivers in the Thai North and Northeast has been relieving, as downpours have stopped and high-capacity Bhumibol, Sirikit, Kiew Lom and Kiew Ko Ma Dams in the areas have efficiently catered the flooding water, heavy floods in low-lying zones near the Yom River, in Phrae, Sukhothai, Pitsanulok and Nakhon Sawan Provinces, where there are no dams and water management measures in good place, are most worried now.
The top Thai Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry official said that his ministry's Royal Irrigation Department has, therefore, issued warnings for local people in the critical areas to evacuate to highlands as a precaution for their safety. (TNA)
