Thai businesses urged to focus on ASEAN market

BANGKOK, August 4 (TNA) - Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce Dusit Nuntanakorn has downplayed the importance of Thailand’s export markets in the U.S. and Europe, saying that Thai businesses should instead focus on the ASEAN market.

Dusit made the suggestion on Wednesday, saying that with economic uncertainties in the U.S. and Europe arising out of Washington’s debt ceiling crisis and European economic recession, Thailand should try to be less dependent on the two economies. He suggested Thailand to increase its export market share in Asia to 24-28 percent.

To this end, Dusit urged the incoming Thai government to revise outdated trade regulations, update the country’s logistics system in order to reduce transport costs, and steer towards the “National Single Window” approach to enhance and facilitate trade competiveness.

The Thai Chamber of Commerce Chairman further said the Thai Chamber of Commerce together with the government-run Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion (OSMEP) also planned to organize a program to prepare small and medium entrepreneurs from Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia for the advent of the ASEAN economic community (AEC) in 2015.

Meanwhile, Director of OSMEP Yuthasak Supasorn affirmed that the government was ready to help Thai businesses prepare for the AEC. He said the OSMEP would propose 1 billion baht from the “AEC Fund” to help businesses, adding that a technical seminar would also be held this August 18 at Plaza Athenee on Wireless Road, at which Thai prime minister and leading business people from ASEAN region would be invited to share their knowledge and experiences.
