Thailand's floods-related death toll rises to nine
BANGKOK, August 4 (TNA) - Thailand's floods-hit northern and northeastern provinces have increased to 17, with death toll and missing from inundations and related incidents having risen to nine and six respectively over the past week.
Thai Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health Narong Sahamethapat said on Thursday, citing an official report, that current inundations, caused by the seasonal Noc-ten storm, have spread to two more northern Thai provinces, including Phayao and Petchabun.
Narong noted that most of the nine floods-related fatalities in the 17 affected provinces so far had been caused by drownings, landslides and electrical shorts; while six others have remained missing.
The senior Thai health official said that some a dozen of local hospitals have also been flooded at their entrances or even their first-floor areas, but all the hospitals have operated their normal medical services.
According to the Thai Public Health Ministry statistics, there have been some 7,000 flood-borne patients in the affected provinces so far, most of them have suffered from the athlete's foot disease, followed by influenza; so, some 79,000 sets of medications have been dispatched for treatments of the flood victims.
