Drastic flooding in Thailand

BANGKOK, August 4 (TNA) - The flood situation in Thailand’s North and Northeast has remained drastic, causing large scale evacuations and significant damage to vast areas of farmland.

In Sukhothai province, floodwater continued to occupy the districts of Sawankhalok, Sri Samrong and Muang Sukhothai as of Thursday. An alert had been placed on the Yom river, which continued to sustain water flowing downstream from tributaries in Wang Chin and Muang Phrae districts of Phrae province.

Overflowing water from the Yom river had reportedly swept across more than 2,000 houses, flooding almost 40,000 rai of paddy fields in Sam Ngam district of nearby Phichit province.

In Chiang Mai province, the Khao River flooded about 1,000 homes in Tambon San Phisua locality close to Muang Chiang Mai and San Sai districts, with some areas measuring nearly one meter-deep floodwater. The latest report however, cited a relieving situation in San Kamphaeng district where water was receding.

Meanwhile, the water level of the Mekong river in northeastern Nakhon Phanom province was recorded at 12.30 meters deep on Thursday 8 a.m. (local time). Provincial authorities expected the level to reach its critical level on Friday, prompting people in flood-prone areas to prepare for possible evacuation. (TNA)
