Qatar Calls for Serious Steps to Support Palestinian Rights
Doha, August 03 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has called for taking serious and concrete steps as well as practical measures to ensure that the Palestinian people would obtain their legitimate rights to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law and resolutions of international legitimacy of Security Council resolution No. 242 and the resolution of the UN General Assembly No. 181 .
This came in a speech delivered by HE Minister of State for International Cooperation Dr. Khalid bin Mohammad Al-Attiyah, at the opening meeting of the Select Committee arising from the Ministerial Committee of the Arab peace initiative, which kicked off here tonight.
HE the Minister Al Attiyah said that the meeting is held in exceptional circumstances taking place in the Arab region", pointing out to the suspension of the Middle East peace negotiations as a result of the intransigence of the current Israeli government and the non-implementation of United Nations resolutions related to the Palestinian cause, a matter which calls us to work to take concrete steps and practical measures to ensure that the Palestinian people would attain their legitimate rights
HE the Minister said that we are meeting today in Doha to provide the necessary political support and the Arab support required with respect to the request for full membership of the State of Palestine in United Nations (UN) and the consideration of alternatives and appropriate options that will contribute to achieving the aspirations of the Palestinian people for an independent and sovereign State living in peace and security with its neighbours.
The Minister of State for International Cooperation stressed that the issue of gaining complete membership of the state of Palestine at the UN , which is compatible with the resolutions of international legitimacy needed a unified Arab position to stand against the hurdles that impede its implementation, "especially as Arab countries, we have always and still hope for peace and stability for the peoples of the world, and we have contributed to solving conflicts and protecting world peace and stability over the past decades".
Al Attiyah added " we hope that all peace-loving nations that seek the realization of equality and democracy and championing the freedom -seeking peoples and those who want to realize their legitimate rights , to support the Palestinian people's efforts for establishing their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
He said he believed this would constitute an important pillar for realizing peace and stability in the Middle East which witnesses new events that will reflect on the future of Arab relations with the world.
Al Attiyah said it is hoped that the mini-committee of the Arab Peace Initiative will formulate a unified Arab position that supports the quest of the Palestinians and their endeavors at the UN to gain the full membership of the international organization. Such a step would help contribute to facing any impediments that might encounter the Palestinian people's demand for realizing their legitimate rights and urging friendly countries to support this demand.
