27 Thai schools close due to floods

BANGKOK, August 3 (TNA) - Flooding in Thailand’s North and Northeast has remained critical, forcing the temporary closure of at least 27 schools.

Secretary-General for the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) Dr Chinapat Phumirat revealed on Wednesday the overall flood situation had already affected 80 schools across 13 provinces, of which 27 schools had been temporarily closed.

Chinapat said the OBEC had initially granted 200,000 baht to each affected school, noting more relief-fund would be allocated after all flood-related damages had been assessed.

Meanwhile, in Chiang Mai province, deep flooding had been reported in Ban Bo Sang village where local businesses remain closed for the second consecutive day. In Saraphi district, 700 families living by the Kuang river had relocated to higher grounds after the river overflowed on Tuesday.

In Mae Hong Son province, three hill tribe villagers in Ban Putha village of Sop Moei district had been reported missing in a landslide; while all nine districts in nearby Phitsanulok province had been declared disaster zones. (TNA)
