Floods in Thailand kill one

BANGKOK, August 3 (TNA) - Widespread flooding in Thailand’s North and Northeast has claimed at least one life.

In Sukhothai province, a punctured section of the Yom River dyke sent over 20 families in Tambon Pak Khwai locality of Muang district scurrying for evacuation. A man was reportedly electrocuted to death while trying to relocate his belongings.

In Mae Hong Son province, flooding was reported all across Pai district, with water in mainstream rivers brimming. More than 10 homes at the waterfront had been swept away by strong currents. In Mae Sariang district, the Yuam and Mae Sariang rivers were rising rapidly, causing landslides that threw down trees and power lines on to roads.

In the Northeast, the overflowing Songkhram River inundated vast areas of local farmland. Waterfront residences were submerged by as much as two meter-deep floodwater.

In Sakon Nakhon province, over 5,000 families in Akas Amnuay district were still in critical condition, with excess water flooding nearly 50,000 rai of their paddy fields. Torrential rain was however forecast to continue there.

Meanwhile, outgoing Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Wednesday convened with the governor of Sukhothai province, as well as the departments of Irrigation, Water Resources, Meteorology, and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.

Concerned officials were ordered to monitor flood situations around the clock, particularly within key business districts. (TNA)
