Pak PM calls for halt to violation of country's territory
Islamabad, Sept 16 (PTI) A day after Pakistani troops forced back an attempted aerial intrusion by U.S. led coalition forces from Afghanistan, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani Tuesday called for an immediate halt to violations of the country's territory.
Gilani said that sovereignty and territorial integrity of
the country would be "safeguarded at all costs", while
underlining the need for greater cooperation and understanding
of all stakeholders.
"Pakistani Armed forces are fully capable of handling any
kind of situation", Gilani told the visiting British Secretary
of State for Law and Justice, Jack Straw here, an official
statement said.
Pakistan Prime Minister also said that a meeting of the
small jirga or council of elders would be held soon, which
would hopefully make headway for lasting peace in the restive
Pak-Afghan tribal border belt.
While conceding that due to difficult terrain and porous
borders, it was difficult to check cross border movement, the
Prime Minister said still the Pakistani forces were playing an
effective role.
Straw was quoted by Pakistani officials as agreeing that
foreign incursions into Pakistani territory would prove
counter productive.
But Straw at the same time hoped that Islamabad would
continue to provide passage to NATO convoys to Afghanistan
through its territory. PTI CORR AKD
