Authorities shore up demand and prices of Thai fruits

BANGKOK, August 2 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Commerce, in cooperation with other public agencies concerned, will, this year, continue to boost demand and prices of locally-grown fruits on both the domestic and overseas markets.

Thai Permanent Secretary for Commerce Yanyong Puangraj insisted on the unchanged policy on Tuesday, saying that it should further raise the prices of Thai fruits and income of local orchards.

Given the policy, Yanyong pointed out, the price of locally-grown Longan, for example, has risen to nearly 33 baht per kilogram on average so far this year, compared with 27-28 baht per kilogram last year, although its total produce has exceeded a higher level of 620,000 tonnes; while the average price of locally-grown lychee has increased to 27 baht per kilogram despite its total output of more than 37,000 tonnes, thanks to his ministry's moves on creating and maintaining nationwide market networks for Thai fruits sold on the domestic market and shipped to serve overseas markets.

The senior Thai Commerce Ministry official also attributed the higher prices of Thai fruits to his ministry's success in helping expand exports of the internationally-popular, locally-grown fruits, including durian, to more regional markets with rising demand, particularly those in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), over the past couple years.

According to the senior Thai official, his ministry and other parties concerned need to launch a joint campaign as well--aimed to promote more domestic consumption of Thai fruits and to maintain their higher prices. (TNA)
