Thai South blanketed by new round of haze
SONGKHLA, August 2 (TNA) - Several provinces in the Thai South have been blanketed by a new round of haze, caused by forest fires on Sumatra Island in neighbouring Indonesia.
In Songkhla Province on Tuesday morning, for instance, widespread areas, including those offshore in the Gulf of Thailand, onshore and even roadsides, were blanketed by the mild smog with reduced visibility, forcing trawlers, in particular, to be more cautious.
Wanchai Sakudomchai, chief of Thailand's meteorological office on the east-south coast in Songkhla, said that satellite images had shown rising spots of wildfire on the Sumatra Island to nearly 270 now and a southwest monsoon is believed to have brought about the haze to blanket Songkhla and other areas in the Thai South.
The senior Thai meteorologist acknowledged, however, that the air quality index in Songkhla's Hat Yai District over the past 24 hours had stood at 58.0, within its standard range, so, the mild smog has not yet posed any health risk to local people. (TNA)
