Thai authorities urgently assisting flood victims

BANGKOK, August 1 (TNA) - Thailand's national committee on water resources called an urgent meeting in Bangkok on August 1--at which parties concerned discussed and worked out measures to immediately assist flood victims in the Thai North and Northeast.
The meeting, attended by representatives of the Royal Irrigation Department, the Meteorological Department, the Department of Mineral Resources and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, also assessed updated developments in 13 flood-hit northern and northeastern Thai provinces, particularly Nan, Phrae, Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon, Loei and Udon Thani, where the current inundations have remained critical with accumulated rainfalls over the past three days having exceeded 200 millimetres.
The national panel also instructed agencies concerned in Mae Hong Son, Tak, Kanchanaburi, Chantaburi and Trat Provinces, where torrential downpours are expected over the next couple of days, to urgently prepare full assistance for flood-stricken areas and to timely warn local people of all possible impacts subsequently.
The panel also resolved to present the so-called "Nan Model" for flood relief to agencies concerned in the severely-inundated Nan Province on August 8. (TNA)
