Flood hits Thailand’s northern Chiang Mai city

CHIANG MAI, August 1 (TNA) - Persistent showers, flooding and landslides in northern Thailand’s Chiang Mai province have continued to defy local livelihood.

In San Kamphaeng district, over 100 villages were affected from flooding, while rain-triggered landslides blocked road access to the area’s landmark attraction Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep temple.

People in Ban On village had relocated to higher grounds as overflowing water from the Mao On river continued to inundate their homes. Floodwater was reportedly measured at one meter deep in the areas, making roads impassable to vehicles. Deep floodwater also covered a wide area of lowland San Kamphaeng municipality.

Elsewhere, people living in Chaechang, Ontai and San Kamphaeng subdistricts were told to relocate their belongings, as officials were dispatched to help erect sandbag dikes.

A low visibility warning of only 10 metres was also issued due to prevalent mist.

Public access to the Nam Tok Huay Kaew waterfall was also barred due to strong currents. (TNA)
