Nock-Ten causes floods in several Thai provinces
BANGKOK, July 31 (TNA) - Tropical storm Nock-ten has triggered floods in many areas of Thailand while the level of the Mekong River is rising up rapidly.
In a cloudy Nakhon Phanom Province, rain has continued pouring down heavily in Muang District from Saturday night and water levels in riverside areas near the Mekong River are rising rapidly especially in Na Thom, Ban Phaeng and Sri Songkhram Districts. Local authorizes have been dispatched to help the locals pumping the water out of the areas.
Rain-triggered floods have hit Prajak Silpakhom, Meechai and Udon Thani-Nong Khai Friendship Roads, making them impassable for the time being.
Many local people have been forces to park their vehicles on high grounds near Nong Khai Phon Phisai Road due to floods but some were instead damaged by fallen trees. The level of the Mekong River in Nong Khai is measured at 12.30 centimeters.
In the Northern Province of Phrae, flooding occurs widely in Huai Ma Subdistrict. Police and highway officials have closed Phrae-Nan Road due to deep floodwater while the evacuation of residents in flood risk areas in Muang, Sung Men and Den Chai Districts have been completed.
Meanwhile, Irrigation officials in Chiang Rai Province are hurriedly discharging water from the Mae Suay Reservoir and the Chiang Rai Dam into the Mekong River to enable the facilities to receive more rainwater. Flash flood warnings have been issued to communities locating near waterways. (TNA)
