Thailand forges for expansion of MICE industry in five years

BANGKOK, July 30 (TNA) - Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) will propose a new five-year plan to the incoming Thai government aimed to promote and forge for further growth of the country’s Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) industry.
TECB Chief Akkapol Sorasuchart said that his office's 2012-2016 plan is also aimed to be part of Thailand's preparations for the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015 with the liberalisation of regional business activities and greater competitions.
Under the new five-year plan, Thailand has targeted to become Asia’s MICE hub by 2016 with increasing revenues and the number of international visitors to the Kingdom for the MICE industry by 15-25 per cent annually.
By 2016, the TECB Chief noted that Thailand is likely to receive up to 1.4 million international MICE visits, or some 75 per cent increase from the current figure, which will generate additional national revenues of some 130 billion baht, or about 87 per cent increase from the current level, and that efforts are being made, in the meantime, to attract more world-class events into the country, namely the World Expo 2020.
