King endorses royal decree on reconvening Thai Parliament

BANGKOK, July 30 (TNA) - His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej has endorsed a royal decree on convening the new Thai Parliament session on August 1, paving the way for convening the first House session after the country's July 3 new general election.
Pithoon Phumhiran, Secretary-General to the Thai House of Representatives, said that His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will inaugurate the new Thai Parliament session on behalf of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Pithoon revealed that the first session of the Thai House of Representatives will then convene on August 2 to elect the new Thai Parliament President, who is also the new House Speaker, and Vice Parliament Presidents.
According to the House secretary-general, the election of the new Thai Parliament President and Vice Presidents needs to be endorsed by His Majesty the King in royal commands, the process of which is expected to take about one week.
After that, the chief of the Thai House Secretariat said, a House session will convene to vote for the country's new prime minister. Yingluck Shinawatra, the top list MP of the majority-elected Pheu Thai Party is believed to be then voted Thailand's new and first female prime minister.
Outgoing Democrat prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said he expected to remain in the prime minister's seat until Aug 10.
Meanwhile, 496 MPs elected in the July 3 national poll have been officially endorsed by the Election Commission of Thailand, leaving the remaining four in the 500-seat Thai House unapproved, including a red-shirt leader, Jatuporn Prompan, whose qualification has been scrutinized. Jatuporn has been jailed on terrorism charges in connection with Thailand's bloody political unrest last year. (TNA)
