Thailand's new House session likely to start on August 1

BANGKOK, July 29 (TNA) - Pithoon Phumhiran, Secretary-General to the Thai House of Representatives, said on Friday that the country's first Lower House session is expected to convene on August 1, after the Thai Parliament is re-opened by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, on behalf of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Pithoon told reporters, however, that, according to the 2007 Thai Constitution, the date for the first House session after Thailand's July 3 new general election is to be set in a royal decree on the opening of the Thai House, and that the royal decree, which is to be endorsed by His Majesty the King, has not yet been issued.
Pithoon said he, therefore, has not issued an invitation for newly-elected Thai MPs to attend the first House session. Pithoon insisted if the royal decree is issued, his office can distribute the invitation right away. The 2007 Thai Charter requires that the invitation be sent to elected MPs at least two days before the first House session.
Meanwhile, 30 red-shirt demonstrators filed a letter with the majority-elected Phue Thai Party's key figure Yingluck Shinawatra this afternoon, demanding the appointment of Pheu Thai list MP Colonel Apiwan Wiriyachai as the new Thai House Speaker, who is also Parliament President. Yingluck said she would consider their request and would make the best decision.
Chai Chidchob, Bhumjaithai Party list MP and former Thai Parliament president, suggested that the Pheu Thai Party pick a good, well-experienced parliament president who is knowledgeable about laws. (TNA)
