ASEAN navies to launch direct phone line

BANGKOK, July 28 (TNA) - Naval forces of member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including Thailand, are likely to launch, in the near future, their direct telephone line to strengthen their relations and cooperation.

The issue is expected to be discussed at the 5th ASEAN Naval Chiefs Meeting or ANCM-5, being held in Hanoi, Vietnam's capital, from July 27-29, amid territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

The ASEAN's navy direct telephone line is aimed to help the regional naval forces to deal with maritime issues, namely arrests of trawlers for infringing on sea territories and disaster rescue operations.

The proposed annual ANCM was first held in 2001, but the ongoing ANCM-5 was held for the first time over the last five years. The ASEAN navy chiefs have, however, agreed that their next summit be held in Brunei next year. (TNA)
