Thai government to take legal action against German Walter Bau firm

BANGKOK, July 28 (TNA) - The Thai government will take legal action against a German construction company, Walter Bau, for its recent seizure of a royal Thai jet seated at the Munich Airport.
Outgoing Thai prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has announced that Thailand is taking legal action against Walter Bau, a now insolvent firm previously concessioned to construct the Don Muang tollway project, a road link to Don Muang Airport in Bangkok. Abhisit said that the Thai government will soon reveal details of the case after consulting with legal advisors.
An international arbitration tribunal ruled against Thailand in 2009 and awarded compensation to Walter Bau amounting to more than 30 million euros plus interest and legal costs of around 2 million euros. While the firm has said that the tribunal's ruling is final, the Thai government has filed an appeal against the verdict.
The international arbitration tribunal recently ordered the seizure of the Thai Boeing 737 aircraft to force the Thai government to repay the debt to Walter Bau. But the Thai administration has insisted that the aircraft is a personal property of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralonkorn, who made frequent visits to Germany. (TNA)
