Thai Parliament to reconvene on Aug 1

BANGKOK, July 28 (TNA) - The Thai Parliament will reconvene on August 1, paving the way for the election of the country's new prime minister thereafter, in the wake of the new national poll on July 3.
The Bureau of the Royal Household announced that His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will preside over a royal ceremony to reconvene the Thai Parliament and will deliver a ceremonial inauguration speech on behalf of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej next Monday afternoon.
Thailand's 500-seat House of Representatives is scheduled to start work on August 3 with the election of a new House Speaker, who will also be the country's new Parliament President, followed by the election of the new Prime Minister on August 5.
The Pheu Thai Party, aligned with exiled ex-Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra, won Thailand's July 3 general election in a landslide and Yingluck Shinawatra, Thaksin's youngest sister, is expected to be voted the country's first female prime minister. Yingluck, a 44-year-old leading Thai businesswoman-turned politician, is expected to then form Thailand's new six-party coalition government, holding the majority vote of about three-fifths in the Thai House.
The reconvention of the Thai Parliament followed the Election Commission of Thailand (EC)'s official endorsements of 496 elected MPs, so far, accounting for 95 per cent threshold required by the 2007 Thai Constitution to reconvene after a new general election. A new batch of 94 elected MPs were endorsed by the Thai election agency last night, leaving only four elected MPs having not yet been endorsed, including a red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan, who has been jailed on terrorism charges in connection with the country's bloody political unrest last year.
