Thailand to become the world’s 10th biggest automotive producer before 2016

BANGKOK, July 27 (TNA) - The Thai Automotive Industry Association is confident Thailand can reach its goal of becoming the world’s 10th biggest automotive producer before 2016.

President of the Association Piangjai Kaewsuwan, said she was certain Thailand would enter the global top 10 sooner than expected with an output of 2.5 million vehicles per year, considering its production capacity rising by 10 percent on average annually. She noted at present the combined local production capacity of all manufacturers stood at 2 million units annually.

Piangjai credited automakers for launching new models every year to replace old ones and to better serve the demands of users, saying this would help maintain the growth of Thailand’s automotive market.

Nevertheless, Piangjai said the number of newly graduates specializing in automotive-related fields was decreasing and the automotive industry might face serious labour shortages in the future. On this matter, she said the Education Ministry must improve vocational studies to produce workers to serve the industry’s labour demand. (TNA)
