Narathiwat's bomb attack related to drug traffickers

NARATHIWAT, July 27 (TNA) - Local security authorities said that a bomb attack at a section of a railroad in Ra-ngae of Thailand's southernmost Narathiwat Province on Wednesday morning, causing damage and a temporary suspension of train services in the Thai far South, from the Yala to the Sungai-Kolok stations and vice versa, was a retaliation of suspected drug traffickers.

Major General Akkara Tiproj, Deputy Director of Thailand's Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), Southern Region, told reporters of the find-out from an initial investigation, as Thai railway authorities seized a large lot of 60,000 methamphetamine tablets in Hua Hin of the country's upper southern Prachuap Khiri Khan Province on Tuesday.

Major General Akkara said, however, that the suspects appeared not to threaten people's lives or any train, but wanting to disrupt concerned authorities' communication networks, instead.

The bomb explosion took place in Narathiwat's Baan Salokadae area, but there were no people killed or injured from the bomb blast. Reports said that there was even another explosion at a site, some 150 metres from the first blast, when the local officers were inspecting the first scene, but there were no casualties. Local police investigators and troops also found two more bombs hidden near the site of the first blast but they successfully destroyed them with highly-pressured water cannons.

The local authorities noted that the train networks in the Thai far South will be suspended until repair to the damaged section is completed, and that at least 14 trains have been affected. (TNA)
