OIC attends Ministerial meeting on Dakar Agreement
Jeddah, September 16, SPA -- The Contact Group in charge of
implementing the Dakar Agreement between Chad and Sudan held recently
its Fifth Ministerial meeting in Asmara, Eritrea.
This meeting on September 12 was preceded by the Third Meeting of
experts on Defense, Security and Intelligence which was also held in
Asmara on the 10th and 11th September 2008.
Ambassador Habib Kaabachi, Director in the Political affairs
Department, represented the OIC General Secretariat at this
ministerial meeting of the Contact Group, according to a press
statement of the OIC.
In a statement, the representative of the OIC stressed the
particular interest given the Secretary General of the OIC to the
ongoing efforts and initiatives undertaken by the Contact Group in
order to re-establish peace and security between Chad and Sudan in
the follow-up and implementation of the Dakar Agreement signed on the
sidelines of the OIC Summit in Dakar.
He also mentioned the personal involvement of the OIC Secretary
General and his recent meetings with President Omar Al Bashir of
Sudan and the Foreign Minister of Chad, on the sidelines of the
Summit on cooperation between Turkey and Africa, held in August 2008
in Istanbul, in which he appealed to the two countries to solve their
dispute through peaceful means and negotiations.
Furthermore, the representative of the OIC conveyed to the Meeting
the appeal of the OIC Secretary General to Chad and Sudan to
re-establish their diplomatic relations as soon as possible in order
to restore political dialogue and to build confidence between them.
