Russia finalizes squad for Daegu athletics championships
SEOUL (Yonhap) - Russia has finalized a team of 83 athletes for the World Championships in Athletics in Daegu that starts next month, the international athletics governing body said Wednesday.
The International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) said the Russian team is made up of 36 male and 47 female athletes. The team features Yelena Isinbayeva, a two-time world champion and the world record holder in women's pole vault, and male high jumper Aleksey Dmitrik, who owns the second-best mark this season with 2.36 meters.
Isinbayeva has set 27 world records over her decorated career, which also includes two Olympic gold medals. The 29-year-old failed to complete a successful vault at the 2009 world championships in Berlin and took the last year off to regroup.
The Russian team also includes four defending world champions: male high jumper Yaroslav Rybakov; Valeriy Borchin in the men's 20-kilometer race walk; Sergey Kirdyapkin in the men's 50km race walk; and Olga Kaniskina in the women's 20km race walk.
Since the inaugural world championships in 1983, Russia has won the second most medals behind the U.S. with 132, including 37 gold medals. Russia was fourth in 2009 with four gold medals.
