Thai-Cambodian troop withdrawal may take six months, says Thai Commander

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, July 26 (TNA) - Thailand’s Second Army Area Commander Lieutenant General Tawatchai Samutsakhon has said troop withdrawal from the vicinity of the Preah Vihear temple may take six months at the earliest.

Speaking at the Thai Army’s Suranaree Camp in Nakhon Ratchasima province on Tuesday, Lt Gen Tawatchai insisted situations along the Thai-Cambodian border near the ancient temple had remained normal, with regular patrols conducted by troops on both side to ensure peace and safety.

Tawatchai added that troop withdrawal was a matter between the Thai and Cambodian government, saying an outcome would depend only on the result of bilateral negotiations. He said however, it may take longer than six months to decide because the next Thai government had yet been formed.

Meanwhile, the Second Army Area Commander commented that situations along the common border had gradually improved, noting that the Pha Mor I Dang cliff had recently been reopened, and Cambodian tourists were seen crossing the border to visit the attraction on the Thai side. (TNA)
