Thai MFA to explain to Germany on Walter Bau case

BANGKOK, July 26 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs is considering to send a letter to its German counterpart to clarify a case involving a German firm, Walter Bau, and a royal Thai jet.

Acting Thai Government Spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn told reporters on Tuesday that the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs is looking into relevant information and may soon send the clarification letter to its German counterpart.

Earlier, the German Embassy to Thailand issued a statement seeking Thailand's compensation of 36 million euros to the German Walter Bau firm, as ordered by the International Court of Arbitration, and expressing its hope for Bangkok's action accordingly to uphold confidence in the Thai economy among international investors, including those in Germany, and to represent a positive sign for nurturing sound relations between Thailand and Germany.

Panitan, who is also deputy secretary-general to outgoing Thai premier Abhisit Vejjajiva, insisted that the case is pending a judicial appeal filed by the Thai government, noting that only two parties involved in the case, including the Thai government and the German Walter Bau firm, a major stake holder of the Don Muang tollway project in Bangkok.

Walter Bau filed a lawsuit against the Thai government for an alleged breach of its concessionary contract by not allowing the company to raise its service fee imposed on vehicles using the Don Muang tollway on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road in the Thai capital, leading to International Court of Arbitration's recent order to seize a Thai aircraft as a guarantee pending the settlement of the judicial case. The Thai government has argued that the Boeing 737 impounded at the Munich Airport belongs to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, not the Thai government's property.

The Thai government spokesman called on Germany to take long-term sound bilateral relations between Bangkok and the major European nation into account and to take a discreet action regarding media reports on its plan to impound a second jet of the Thai Crown Prince seated at its Munich Airport.
