Rising fresh food prices seen across many Thai provinces

BANGKOK, July 26 (TNA) - Several provinces in Thailand are suffering from the rising prices of fresh food, pork and chicken eggs, while some areas also reported shortages in the market.

In Nakhon Phanom province, the price of pork meat rose from about 120-150 baht per kilogram to 180 baht per kilogram as of Tuesday. The price of livestock pigs had also increased by 10-20 baht per kilogram from 70 baht per kilogram previously.

Pairat Prathumsuwan, the local livestock development chief, explained that factors including rising raw material costs, and viral infections that caused miscarriage in pigs, had all prompted pig raisers to delay their production, resulting in the shortage and price increase.

At present, livestock development officials and border authorities in Nakhon Phanom had temporarily suspended any movement of over 80 kilogram of pork and banned pork export to Laos to reduce risk of local scarcity.

Meanwhile, in Nakhon Sawan province, the price of chicken eggs had risen by 10 satang. The retail price for 10 “Number 0” eggs had risen to 39 baht, while 10 smallest “Number 5” eggs were sold at 28-29 baht.

The province also reported egg shortages due to insufficient numbers of laying hens as farmers were working to replace the old ones. The number of chicken eggs available for each retailer to purchase had also dropped from 200-250 to 100. (TNA)
