MONGOLIAN KHOOMII FESTIVAL AND MEETING RUN IN LONDON


Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ A Mongolian khoomii (throat singing) festival took place July 19-20 in London, UK on occasion of the 100th anniversary of the modern diplomacy in Mongolia and the 50th anniversary of joining of Mongolia to the United Nations (UN). Apart of the khoomii festival, the Embassy of Mongolia in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has organized the first meeting themed “Cultural heritage of Mongolian khommii” in conjunction with registering khoomii in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.
The Mongolia's Embassy in the UK B.Altangerel has noted all Mongolians were satisfied with registration of the UNESCO cultural heritage for khoomii that is pride of Mongolians, adding that Mongolia has to propagandize it all over the world. He has underlined an importance of discussing a proposal to establish the International Association of Khoomii.
At the meeting, a State Honored Cultural Figure and a khoomii singer D.Tserendavaa has delivered a report on origin and history of khoomii and its classifications. This report has been followed by another report on the same topic given by Dr. Carole Pegg, a scholar of khoomii studies at the University of Cambridge. Dr. Pegg has emphasized an importance of matters about not only propagandizing Mongolian khoomii but also preparing next generation of khoomii singers and to inherit it to them. A leader of the “Khosogton” folk group and Foremost Cultural Worker D.Ariunbold also has given a report themed “Research, tradition and development of khoomii in Mongolia since 1990”, emphasizing an importance to keep the tradition of khoomii although it is needed a development.
Based on the proposal of establishing the International Association of Khoomii (IAKh), this association has been founded in accordance with a decision of the meeting, and then the khoomii singer D.Tserendavaa has been elected as the IAKh's president.
