Nissan unveils plan for Southeast Asia

BANGKOK, July 25 (TNA) - Japanese automaker Nissan is eyeing to triple sales in Southeast Asia to 500,000 units from 150,000 units, plus expand its market share by 15 percent in six years.

Nissan Motor Asia Pacific President Toru Hasegawa said on Monday, the plan will embody the launch of over 10 new auto models in the region, along with business collaboration with local governments namely in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Under the plan, Nissan will also enlarge its body of engineering staff in Indonesia and Thailand three-fold from 120 to 370, and promote R&D on engine development there. A USD250 million investment will be allotted on a new production facility in Thailand, specializing the production of continuously variable transmission (CVT) systems, which will source parts to Nissan assembly plants in the region.

According to Hasegawa, a new regional Nissan Motor Asia Pacific headquarters will also be established in Thailand to enhance its regional strategy, being its first office set up under the International Procurement Center program of the government.

Meanwhile, the Nissan president stated that Nissan’s growth had so far been catalyzed by markets in Thailand and Indonesia, especially in the eco-car division. He said that Nissan planned to double its production capacity in this region from 370,000 to 700,000 units. (TNA)
