M6.4 quake jolts northeastern Japan, no tsunami warning issued+
TOKYO, July 23 Kyodo -
A strong earthquake with a provisional magnitude of 6.4 jolted northeastern Japan Saturday afternoon, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
No tsunami warning was issued from the 1:34 p.m. quake, and there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the quake.
The quake registered upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in inland areas of southern Iwate Prefecture and lower 5 in inland areas of northern Iwate.
No abnormalities were reported by Tokyo Electric Power Co. at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant or by Tohoku Electric Power Co. at its Onagawa nuclear power plant in Miyagi Prefecture following the quake.
The focus of the quake was off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture at a depth of about 47 kilometers.
The agency earlier said it registered a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 and it originated around 40 km underground.
