Thailand-Laos to cooperate to solve border problems

BANGKOK, July 22 (TNA) - Thai and Lao authorities met in Sirindhorn District of Thailand’s northeastern Ubon Ratchathani Province on Friday to discuss solutions to cross-border problems, namely drug and human trafficking, smuggling of stolen vehicles and illegal logging.
Sirindhorn District Chief Tornthan Shinkomut and Chief of Ponthong District of Laos’s Champasak Province Than Samarn Romyen co-chaired the meeting, in which representatives of concerned agencies from both countries also took part.
During the meeting, Colonel Withoon Sabaijai, Commander of Thailand's 2061st Paramilitary Ranger Company, asked the Lao authorities to help suppress the cross-border crime and proposed joint border patrols. The Lao side promised to cooperate, saying that narcotics have caused worldwide problems.
Regarding the smuggling of stolen vehicles from Thailand to Laos, Than Samarn urged Thai authorities to inform their Lao counterparts of any car theft right away so that the Lao side could stop stolen vehicles.
For illegal logging and human trafficking along the border, Than Samarn said Thai authorities could arrest illegal Lao loggers and asked Thai authorities to check immigrants’ documents thoroughly, prosecute and repatriate illegal immigrants right away. (TNA)
