Thailand demands talks before troop withdrawal

BANGKOK, July 22 (TNA) - In the wake of the International Court of Justice (ICJ)’s order for both Thailand and Cambodia to withdraw their troops from the vicinity of the ancient Preah Vihear Temple along their common border, Thai caretaker foreign minister Kasit Piromya insisted on Friday that both countries need to hold talks before withdrawing their troops.
Kasit said that without an agreement from the talks between Thai and Cambodian authorities concerned, Indonesian observers cannot enter the unsettled area along the common border, noting that there have already been attempts through many channels to arrange for the bilateral negotiations.
Authorities of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a meeting to first discuss and consider Thailand's responses to the demilitarized zone along the Thai-Cambodian border, as ordered by The Hague-based ICJ recently, and officials of the Thai Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence will later meet on July 25 to further discuss Thailand's actions in relation to the World Court’s order.
Meanwhile, the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border has remained normal. However, Thai soldiers from the 203rd Artillery Battalion met leaders of local communities and government officials in Thailand's northeastern Si Sa Ket Province adjacent to the 11th-century Preah Vihear Temple to discuss measures to jointly cope with possibly renewed clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops along the common border.
