Intensified security measures maintained in Thai deep South

BANGKOK, July 21 (TNA) - Thai Army Commander-in-Chief General Prayuth Chan-o-cha said on Thursday that he has instructed state security forces to maintain their intensified measures to prevent and deal with insurgency in Thailand's Muslim-predominant deep South, particularly during the upcoming one-month Ramadan period to ensure public safety and to support Islamic religious activities.
General Prayuth, who was visiting the troubled Thai far South, made the instruction when he called a meeting of concerned army units at the Sirindhorn military camp in Pattani Province earlier in the day.
The Thai army chief suggested the local security forces not to be complacent after recent statistics showed a drop in violent cases in the country's insurgency-plagued southernmost region, as precarious car or motorcycle-tied bomb attacks have remained with widespread impacts and damages.
The Thai army chief also ordered that the state security forces in the southern border region continue to keep their close watches and crackdown on suspected insurgents, illegal movements of explosives and other serious crime, including smuggling of oil and other products and drug trafficking.
