Thai exports surge over 23% in first half of 2011
BANGKOK, July 21 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Commerce reported on Thursday that Thai exports surged by 23.6 per cent, totally worth 114.98 billion US dollars, in the first half of this year, with the country's exports to the Russian market alone jumping by 88.8 per cent during the January-June 2011 period.
Thai caretaker commerce minister Pornthiva Nakasai said that the country's exports last month alone grew by 16.8 per cent year-on-year, worth over 21 billion US dollars, with increased shipments of locally-produced goods from all categories to overseas markets, particularly agricultural and agro-industrial produce, namely rice and rubber.
Pornthiva noted that Thailand's top export markets in the first six months of this year included Japan, Canada, Africa and Russia, and that the Kingdom maintained a trade surplus of some 1.27 billion US dollars as of the end of June 2011.
The outgoing commerce minister called on the new coalition Thai government, led by the Pheu Thai Party, to continue taking good care of Thai exports and making use of several free trade agreements (FTA) and electronic or e-commerce, assessing that the country's export growth could reach 20 per cent this year--although her ministry has upheld its moderate projection of the country's export expansion in 2011 at only 12-15 per cent.
