Army Chief: Thai troops have not withdrawn from near Preah Vihear temple

BANGKOK, July 21 (TNA) - Thai Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha confirms Thai troops have not been withdrawn from near the Preah Vihear temple despite a World Court order.

Last Monday, the International Court of Justice issued a provisional order for Thailand and Cambodia to withdraw troops to pave the way for the entry of ASEAN observers into the disputed border area.

Gen Prayuth said on Thursday the Army was waiting for the Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs to discuss terms of troop withdrawal with Cambodia. He added that the Court’s decision had not put any party to disadvantage, but was aimed at preventing future border clashes.

“We should find channels to talk with Cambodia. No matter if they agree or not, we will insist on having a talk,” the Army chief said.

Outgoing Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva meanwhile said Cambodia had not responded to the Thai side regarding the debated military presence.

Abhisit insisted Cambodia must first withdraw its troops before the arrival of any observer. He said both countries had not reached any agreement on the issue and should first discuss relevant procedures.

Meanwhile, National Police Chief Police General Wichean Potephosree visited northeastern Si Sa Ket province on Thursday to discuss protection measures for the local people in case an order was given to pull out troops. (TNA)
