Thai food producers prepare for AEC

AYUTTHAYA, July 20 (TNA) - A technical seminar is being held in Thailand to prepare food producers for the formation of an ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.

Commerce Ministry Permanent-Secretary Yanyong Puangraj, chaired the event here on Wednesday, with participants coming from central Thai provinces, namely Pathum Thani, Ayutthaya, Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi and Saraburi. They included producers of processed foods, rice, vegetables, fruits and agricultural produce.

Yanyong said the session aimed to inform operators of trade regulations and terms under the AEC, including potential business opportunities. He noted that Thai operators must prepare themselves for the AEC, under which Southeast Asia would become a single market and production base, resulting in the free movements of products, services, investments, skilled labor and funds in the region.

Southeast Asia was known as the most important market for Thailand in place of the United States, Europe and Japan. In 2010, Thai exports to Southeast Asian countries were estimated at USD44 billion, accounting for 22.6 percent of Thailand’s total export value. It was estimated Thailand imported about USD 30 billion worth of goods from Southeast Asian countries.

Statistics showed that Thailand posted a trade surplus worth more than USD 14 billion with other countries in the region. (TNA)
