Thai FDA intensifies screening imported food from Japan
BANGKOK, July 20 (TNA) - Thailand's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Wednesday that it is intensifying its thorough checks on food products imported from Japan.
FDA Secretary General Dr. Pipat Yingseri acknowledged that the aggravated move followed recent reports that meat from more than 500 cattle in Minamisoma--which were fed by hay exposed to radiation leaks from the troubled Fukushima Daiichi power plant and then detected radioactive cesium 250 times above Japan’s official limit--has been supplied to supermarkets and restaurants.
Dr. Pipat said that his agency, under the supervision of the Thai Ministry of Public Health, will soon issue a new ministerial notice legally requiring that beef and other food products imported from two more Japanese Prefectures at risk for radioactive contamination, including Kanagawa Shizuoka, are subject to the thorough screening to ensure safety for consumers in Thailand.
According to the Thai FDA chief, food products imported from the nine Japanese areas are to be enclosed by an official certificate issued by the Japanese government to ensure their safety.
Earlier, the Thai FDA imposed a measure on strictly checks on food products imported from seven Japanese prefectures surrounding the Fukushima Prefecture, which was battered by a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11 with radiation leaks subsequently. (TNA)
