Thai-Cambodian soldiers remain in the vicinity of Preah Vihear temple

SI SA KET, July 20 (TNA) - Although the International Court of Justice has recognized areas surrounding the Preah Vihear temple a provisional demilitarized zone, troops from Thailand and Cambodia remained in the vicinity until Wednesday.
Authorities in Si Sa Ket province, Thailand’s northeastern frontier with Cambodia, had already begun preparing for possible untoward incidents. Large evacuation exercises were conducted in Kantharalak district, while the military, police and community leaders, reviewed measures to cope with possible border clashes.
Outgoing Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva confirmed that his government would do its best to protect the national and public interests. He insisted there would be no Thai troop withdrawal from the disputed area pending negotiations with the Cambodian side.
Regarding a report that Cambodia planned to deploy border patrol police to replace soldiers within the demilitarized zone, Abhisit said it depended on whether the move complied with the Court order. (TNA)
