Arab League Secretary-General Commends Qatar's efforts in Support of Joint Arab Action
Cairo, July 19 (QNA) - Secretary General of the Arab League Dr Nabil El-Arabi has lauded Qatar's endeavors in support of joint Arab action, embodied in finalizing the Doha document on peace in Darfur that was recently signed in Doha by the Sudanese government and the Liberation and Justice Movement, and underscored the importance that the Justice and Equality Movement joins the agreement in order to achieve a comprehensive peace in the region.
Regarding Arab League's endeavors to calm the situation in Darfur and how the League would deal with the newly born State of South Sudan, the Secretary-General said the Darfur document was signed in Doha on July 14, voicing hope to see the Justice and Equality Movement among the signatories of the document.
As for the State of South Sudan, he said we have cooperative relationship with them but we have not received any request from them for Arab League membership, adding that the League will provide assistance to the Republic of South Sudan and will boost its cooperation with it to attain economic and development growth, he added.
This came during a press briefing convened by Dr El-Arabi with the Arab and foreign media on the occasion of assuming his new position as Secretary-General of the Arab League.
On the Palestinian issue, Dr El-Arabi said there are consultations underway between the Arab League and the Palestinian leadership, represented by President Mahmoud Abbas, and the Arab Peace Initiative Committee, chaired by the State of Qatar, to finalize the efforts to go to the United Nations to request full membership of an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders.
He added that consultations are continuing with the State of Qatar and Palestine to determine what are the next steps to be taken and whether to start with the UN General Assembly or the UN Security Council, especially as the political action is really required in view of the complete paralysis in the peace process.
El-Arabi said that going to UN is not a step against Israel, rather it is in order to achieve a just and comprehensive peace and to declare that the Arab countries are willing to end the Arab-Israeli conflict, adding that it is unacceptable to describe the move as a unilateral step by the Arabs and Palestine, The peace will be achieved only when the parties sit together on the negotiating table and sign the peace agreement.
In this context, the Arab League Secretary General strongly condemned the act of maritime piracy carried out by Israel against the French-flagged Dignite Al-Karame, which was headed to the besieged Gaza Strip.
He appealed to the international community represented in the Security Council to take a firm position against what Israel is doing, while expressing the solidarity of the Arab League with the activists of the international organizations in support of the people of Gaza.
The Secretary-General said that this blockade is illegal, stressing that the blockade of civilians, even in times of wars, is impermissible.
El Arabi said he has been keen on consulting with a number of Arab leaders on the current situation, referring in this regard to his recent talks with HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
He added that his talks with Arab leaders and officials focused on the developments and current events in the region, noting that his consultations with Arab leaders included the issue of development of the Arab League.
