President asks parliament to hold confirmation hearing on top prosecutor nominee
SEOUL, July 19 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak asked the legislature to hold a confirmation hearing on the top prosecutor nominee, his office said Tuesday.
The move comes amid allegations that Han Sang-dae, the current head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, evaded the country's mandatory military service two decades ago.
All able-bodied South Korean young men must serve about two years in the military, a duty considered a key ethical requirement for high-level office holders and politicians.
The confirmation hearing, the date of which has yet to be determined, is widely seen as a formality as the National Assembly has no power to reject the president's appointment of prosecutor general.
The top prosecutor's post has been vacant since earlier this month when Kim Joon-gyu quit in protest of the parliament's passage of a bill that prosecutors claim restricts their oversight of police investigations.
