Thai soldiers maintain vicinity of Preah Vihear temple

BANGKOK, July 19 (TNA) - Thailand’s 2nd Army Area Commander Lt Gen Tawatchai Samutsakhon insists on maintaining Thai soldiers in the vicinity of Preah Vihear temple despite the World Court’s ruling for a demilitarized zone.

Tawatchai said that until now normalcy had remained in all areas under his jurisdiction, saying that there had been no military movement pending the negotiation of Thai and Cambodian governments and military authorities.

He assured troops from the 2nd Army Area would maintain the area to protect Thailand’s national sovereignty, and would take further orders from the Army commander-in-chief only.

In a related development, the Cambodian Bayon community radio station in Poipet, opposite Aranyaprathet district of Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province, repeatedly reported Cambodia's victory over Thailand. It also claimed the International Court of Justice ordered Thailand to unilaterally withdraw troops from the 4.6-square-kilometer disputed area adjacent to the Preah Vihear temple. (TNA)
