Another Thai military helicopter reportedly crashes during rescue mission

PHETCHABURI, July 19 (TNA) - Another military helicopter of the Royal Thai Army sent out to recover all five bodies on board an army helicopter--who were killed in a crash in Kaeng Krajan National Park in Thailand's upper southern Petchaburi Province last Saturday--was believed to have also crashed and the fate of some 16 people on board the rescue Blackhawk has remained unknown.

The Blackhawk was joining two other helicopters of the Thai Ministries of Natural Resources and Environment and Agriculture and Cooperatives in the official operation Tuesday morning to retrieve the five killed in the middle of the national park.

The Blackhawk, one in only six acquired by the Royal Thai Army, reportedly flew some two kilometres farther to the scene of last Saturday's incident and lost contacts. It was believed to have crashed as there was an explosion in the area. Major General Tawan Ruangsri, Commander of the 9th Infantry Division, was among those on board the ill-fated Blackhawk.

Meanwhile, attempts to retrieve the bodies of the five killed in last Saturday's crash have continued to no avail, as rescue helicopters could not access the site due to dense clouds and poor visibility. The unfavourable weather condition forced the operation to stop and the remaining rescue helicopters to return to the head office of the Kaeng Krajan National Park on Tuesday. (TNA)
