MSIA & INDONESIA STRESS ON MEASURES TO ENSURE SUSTAINABILITY OF PALM OIL

LONDON, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Indonesia have spelt out the efforts undertaken by both countries to ensure the sustainable production and supply of palm oil.

In a joint communique the Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Malaysia, Peter Chin Fah Kui, and the Minister of Agriculture Indonesia, Dr. Ir. Anton Apriyantono at the World Sustainable Palm Oil Conference here Monday said the measures had taken into account the unsubstantiated claims that palm oil
production had impacted the environment.

Among other things, they also pointed out the importance of the oil palm industry in generating growth and providing employment and voiced their concerns on measures put in place by major markets that may impede imports of palm oil.

They said balance had been also created between the use of palm oil for food and energy purposes and land development and land use change for the planting of palm oil and the measures implemented domestically to enhance productivity.

Both ministers also took the occasion to interact with the participants regarding the efforts undertaken by their respective countries to implement regulations on the sustainable production of palm oil.

This is the first time whereby ministers from both the palm oil producing countries responsible for oil palm development had jointly addressed a forum of such nature.

The conference, jointly organised by the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (ASLI), the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), and the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) was aimed at discussing the road ahead for sustainable palm oil.
