Thai PM discusses ICJ's ruling with agencies concerned

BANGKOK, July 19 (TNA) - Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva called a meeting with agencies concerned on Tuesday to discuss the World Court's ruling related to the Preah Vihear Temple along the Thai-Cambodian border and its impacts on Thailand.

Representatives of the concerned agencies attending the meeting included those from the Royal Thai Armed Forces, the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Security Council (NSC), the Council of State and the Secretariat of the Thai Cabinet.

Abhisit told reporters after the meeting that he has assigned the Thai Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence to coordinate with the Cambodian side to comply with the World Court's ruling, saying, however, that Thai troops, in the meantime, will remain in an unsettled border area surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple.

The Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled on Monday that Thailand and Cambodia are to continue cooperating within the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in which both are members, including allowing observers assigned by ASEAN to have access to the unsettled area, defined as a provisional demilitarised zone, and are to withdraw troops from the area pending the ICJ's final verdict on a request earlier filed by Phnom Penh seeking the UN highest court's interpretation of its verdict on the Preah Vihear case in 1962.

The ICJ also ordered that both Thailand and Cambodia revive their stalled talks to resolve their border problems, and that Thailand not to obstruct Cambodia’s free access to the Preah Vihear Temple or to prevent the Cambodian side from providing fresh supplies to its non-military personnel.

Under the ICJ's verdict, both Thailand and Cambodia are also required to report developments of their compliance with the World Court's injunctions pending its final verdict in the case, which is likely to take the UN top court several months. (TNA)
