World Court orders Thailand and Cambodia to withdraw troops from unsettled border area

BANGKOK, July 18 (TNA) - The World Court ruled Monday afternoon (Thailand's time) that both Thai and Cambodian troops be withdrawn from a 4.6-kilometre contentious area surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple along the common border, where local villagers eagerly waited for the Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ)'s verdict.
The ICJ's judge panel voted 9:5 on the decision, saying that it would proceed with the case to interpret its 1962 ruling on the ancient Preah Vihear Temple, as requested by Phnom Penh, and ordering both Thailand and Cambodia to pull out their troops from the unsettled area, including Phu Ma Khua mountain, pending its final ruling on the case.
The World Court, on the other hand, rejected Bangkok's request to throw out the case. Experts said that the ICJ's ruling appeared to be in favour of Cambodia, as without Thai troops stationing in the disputed area, Cambodia could go ahead with its plan to unilaterally develop the ancient Preah Vihear as a world heritage site with no obstacles.
In Bangkok, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva would hold a press conference on the issue Monday evening and Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya would report the court’s ruling on phone from The Hague, the Netherlands, to his ministry.
Colonel Prawit Hukaew, Spokesman of Thailand's Commanding General of the 2nd Army Area Command, also announced that Thai troops were waiting for instructions from Thai Army Commander-in-Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha.
Meanwhile, local villagers along the Thai-Cambodian border were eagerly waiting for the World Court's verdict and preparing to deal with the situation subsequently. Some of the border villagers in Baan
Kruad District of Thailand's northeastern Buri Ram Province had packed their belongings in preparation for an immediate evacuation in case of any emergency in the wake of the World Court's ruling. (TNA)
