Thailand will not withdraw troops from disputed area near Preah Vihear temple, says army spokesman

BANGKOK, July 18 (TNA) - The spokesman of the 2nd Army Area of Thailand confirms Thai soldiers will not withdraw from the disputed area adjacent to the Preah Vihear temple, regardless of International Court of Justice’s verdict.
Colonel Prawit Hookaew, deputy chief of staff and spokesman of the 2nd Army Area, said situations along the Thai-Cambodian border remained normal and both sides were waiting for the Court’s ruling on Cambodia’s request that Thailand withdraw troops from the 4.6-square-kilometer disputed land next to the Preah Vihear temple.
He insisted Thai soldiers would stay in the area which belonged to Thailand and protect its sovereignty, unless an order to withdraw was given by their commanders.
On the report that Cambodia was sending military reinforcements and weaponry into the area, Colonel Prawit said it was only redeploying forces. He added that Thailand had not sent any reinforcement there either.
He further said that Thai Army commanders had ordered troops near the area to remain patient and to ignore any provocation by the Cambodian side. However, if Cambodia opened fire, Thai soldiers must respond accordingly to protect their people and the national sovereignty. (TNA)
